Today Pat and I hiked the Eagle Spur Trail in southern Durham County. It starts at Stage Coach Road and goes south along an abandoned railroad easement and ends at Jordan Lake. Last time we were there the lake was full and we saw cranes and turtles and eagles, not to mention fishing boats.
Today was very different. In the fall the lake level goes way down and that part of the lake is completely dry, so we were able to walk out on to the lakebed. It felt like we were in some sort of dystopian ecological disaster. The lakebed is full of dead grass and cracked mud. It’s surprisingly free of debris, but you can find quite shells from mollusks of some sort.
Here are some of my favorite pictures.
